Being Good in Business

14th January 2010

By Karen Mercer, My Coffee Stop

NLCC is delighted that Karen Mercer will be speaking at our Secrets to Success: Celebrating Women in Business Networking Lunch – 03/02/2010 at the beautiful De Vere Theobalds Park, along with Laura Tenison MBE of JoJo Maman Bebe and Karen Peters of KCO.

Karen is a former Traffic & Travel Presenter and has worked in radio for over 10 years helping London commuters through the rush on radio stations such as BBC London, Choice FM, Talk Sport and LBC.

With support and encouragement from the RSA Trust Inspiring Women Program, run by Enterprise Enfield, Karen set up My Coffee Stop, an award winning, ethically pleasing coffee shop on Platform 1 at Enfield Chase Station, with her Partner Gunter Hollenstein. Their aim was to create for themselves a better work/life balance, have more time to spend with their children and make a positive contribution to the local and global communities.

Karen will present “Being Good In Business” at the event – Her inspiration being: “As a Mum, I want to see my children grow up to be kind and generous people....but how can they be like that if they see that their parents are kind and generous in their private lives but are completely different when it comes to business?

In my business, my actions are those that I perceive to be good.....

Not necessarily good for my business at first glance but the best way forward for everyone involved....

In managing my business in this way, I have discovered that conducting our business with an ethical sensibility has had brilliant pay-offs in our business.

I will explain how various initiatives that we have implemented to support different causes have actually helped My Coffee Stop evolve into the flourishing coffee shop that it is today and show how ‘Being Good in Business’ is possible both morally and economically.”
